It seems obvious, when you think about it. Take a mixing bowl — OK, perhaps that should be mixing desk — and add equal parts blue-eyed soul, spectral, snowbound Bon Iver-like folk, gospel declamation and Beach Boys-style harmonies, and, hey presto, you have musical magic. In theory, anyway. In the wrong hands, that could have resulted in the most almighty mess. In Josh Record’s, however, the finished product is sublime, as his new EP, The War, demonstrates so thrillingly.
